A Tasmanian (not) in London

The tales of yet another Australian in (Australia who left) London...

Back at home in Tassie after a year and a half in London, I now dedicate myself to protecting society from unwarranted prosecution by the state. (And keeping criminals out of prison, but mostly that other thing.)

New Job

After all these months of looking for a job, I finally get an offer - for a job in Devonport. Can I imagine myself working for Legal Aid in the far flung provinces?

On the one hand, it would probably be good for me to be removed from my comfort zone and this job would certainly do that. On the other hand - Devonport?

Not to mention that I will have to remember how to do the whole court thing. What was the rule on heresay again?

Luck?

One of the women my mother plays tennis with recently spent a month or so in France, for the most part visiting her extended family. Beforehand, while waiting at Tullamarine for her departure she entered a competition, promptly forgetting about it.

Fast forward about a month, and she returns home to the news that she has won a trip away. To where you might ask, if you didn't of course already know the answer. A five star getaway to Paris.

The Tasmanian and the Teapot in Morocco

Despite my grand plans to write up the notes I made in Morocco into some sort of travel blog, not much has happened until now. However I have been slowing turning my hand to it, and what I have come up with so far can be found here. At the moment what I am doing is little more than a transcription of the notes I made as I traveled.

This is very much in the early stages, and will probably progress in fits and starts. There is certainly a lot of kinks that need to be worked out and I will no doubt be going back and editing posts as the blog develops. I certainly need a half way decent photo of myself, and the Teapot might prefer a more flattering one himself.

Once again, this is very much a project under development, so helpful advice would be appreciated. Unhelpful advice will be dealt with creatively.

The Middle East

The actions of Hezbollah may fairly be described as terrorism, however that doesn't justify the state-sponsored slaughter of Lebanese civilians by the Israeli military.

The Duel

I have been challenged to a duel. Well, what can I say but En Garde! I accept the challenge.

However I feel duty-bound to point out that if the Scarlet Teapot was still in Tasmania I might have considered a complaint under section 81(2) of the Tasmanian Criminal Code (the "Code"), to wit: "Any person who challenges another to fight a duel, or provokes another to fight or to challenge another to fight a duel, is guilty of a crime". As he is not we would be sure to be mired in arguments over jurisdiction. I will note however that it could be argued that the Blog Adjudicator appears guilty under the aforementioned section and is in fact in Tasmania, should any Crown Counsel be reading this.

I of course have the right not to incriminate myself so I shouldn't mention section 81(1) of the Code, to wit: "Any person who takes part in a duel is guilty of a crime".

(Hopefully none of us are guilty under section 122 of the Code.)

Italy 1-0 Australia

We was robbed, robbed I tell you. If that was a penalty then I'm the next Chief Justice of the High Court.

Something Else

Well, I have finally found a way to use my short attention span for good rather than evil.

In preparation for a job interview next week I decided that I should read a text on policy analysis, so as to avoid looking like an arse on the subject like I did in my last interview. However the book in question is written in such a frustrating manner (ie. by academics) that rather than continue reading it I have looked for anything else that I could occupy myself with. So in avoiding doing one piece of work I have in fact completed the draft of a job application, filled in a form from the Electoral Commission as to why I didn't vote, mowed the lawn, split some wood and lit the fire, and its still only lunch time (though as I now find myself writing this I may well have run out of productive distractions).

I think I will keep a hold of this book and resolve to read a chapter each morning. Who knows what I will get done in avoiding that resolution.
